Resume & Letters

Resumes & Letters

Resumes are a key tool in your job search. At Supporting Lives, you will work closely with your Employment Specialist
and our team of volunteers to create a resume that’s right for you. Cover letters are not always required,
but they can help set you apart. Here are some key points to remember about resumes and cover letters.

  • Resumes demonstrate professionalism and can communicate soft skills.
  • Cover letters are sometimes required and, if optional, can help set you apart.
  • Resumes & cover letters should be in addition to, not in place of, an application.
  • Save your resumes and cover letters so you can easily update them.

Which type of resume is right for you:
functional or chronological?

A Functional Resume lists your “hard” and “soft” skills, rather than your specific employment history. This resume format is helpful if you have employment gaps; it highlights your strengths and
downplays the time you were not employed.

Chronological Resume lists your experience and
skills by date, with the most recent at the top of the page followed by previous jobs beneath. It is simple to               write and easy for an employer to follow.

Cover Letters

Cover Letters are required at times and can help set you apart, if optional. Cover Letters should be in addition to, not in place of, an application.
