What is a Goal? – Know your target

A goal gives you a target.  Goals help you focus your energy and give you a sense of purpose.

Goals help you break down what might feel impossible into smaller action steps that you can manage.

Goals can focus on any aspect of your life – employment, as well as housing, health, relationship, family, education, and more.

How to Set Goals: Break it down, break it down…

It’s important to have big goals, but it’s just as important to break those goals down into smaller goals and sub-actions.

If your goal is to “Get a Job,” you’ll need to break that down into smaller steps you will take to get there.

SMART Goals: Improve your chances of hitting your target

Your goals should measure up to these 5 qualities.  They should be…

Specific:  What type of job are you looking for?  It helps to focus your search.

Measurable:  Say exactly what you will do – “send six resumes” vs. “send resumes.”

Accountable:  Make sure that you are the one accountable for your goal.

Realistic:  Set yourself up for success – what do you need to do to get there?

Timely:  Set specific deadlines for your sub-actions and revise as needed.

Learning from Experience: Set goals after each interview

Goals should not be set in stone – they will change over time.  Review your goals and revise as needed.  Learn from experience and set new goals based on what you learn.
