Learning to use a computer, to communicate through email, and to research on the Internet are valuable job searching skills. Let us show you some everyday skills that may be needed to help you excel in this area.

In this section you will learn:

Windows

Windows – Menus, toolbars, minimize, maximize, close

  • FILE = save, print, open
  • EDIT = correct a mistake
  • VIEW = magnify
  • FORMAT = change font (size, underline, bold, etc…)
  • TOOLS = spell check

 

How to copy (or cut) & paste

  • Step 1: Highlight (click & drag over text)
  • Step 2: Right-click, then left click “Copy” (or “Cut”)
  • Step 3: Left-click where you want to paste
  • Step 4: Right-click, then left click “Paste”

Saving – Don’t forget to save your work!

  • Step 1: Left-click the FILE menu
  • Step 2: Left-click “Save As…” from the menu
  • Step 3: If saving to your floppy disk, click arrow & select “3½ Floppy (A:)” from the drop down menu
  • Step 4: Type in the name of the document you want to save in the “File name” bar
  • Step 5: Click the “Save” button

Attaching Resumes – Practice makes perfect

  • Step 1: Write your email first.
  • Step 2: Click the “Attach” button.
  • Step 3: Browse to your disk & click on your resume file to select it.
  • Step 4: Click the “Open” (or “Insert”) button. After it’s attached, your resume file name should appear below the body of your email under the paperclip icon.
  • Step 5: Click the “Send” button & your resume along with your email will be sent.
